Modern client-side routers (React Router v7, TanStack Router) orchestrate view transitions using the browser's native History API. When an interactive user clicks an internal link, the router intercepts the native click event (e.preventDefault()), updates the browser address bar via history.pushState(), and renders the matching component branch.
For human users, this transition feels instantaneous. However, for search engine crawlers, this client-centric mechanism introduces two severe architectural complications:
pushState calls. They extract absolute links from the href attributes of standard <a href="..."> tags in static HTML and issue independent HTTP GET requests for each URL. If navigation links are rendered via non-semantic elements (such as <button onClick="..."> or hash routes like <a href="#/catalog">), crawlers fail to discover child routes.index.html with an HTTP 200 OK status:
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html;/products/deleted-sku-999), the server responds with status 200 OK. The client bundle loads, executes React Router, determines the resource does not exist, and mounts a <NotFound /> component. The crawler records the 200 OK header and indexes an error screen as a legitimate, indexable page.Soft 404 errors inflict catastrophic SEO damage: Googlebot exhausts daily crawl quotas rescanning thousands of phantom URLs, and duplicate "Resource Not Found" content dilutes the domain's topical authority.
Achieving optimal search indexing in SPAs requires strict alignment across three distinct tiers: the transport layer (HTTP Status Code), the address bar (Canonical URL), and the in-memory router state.

}Supplying a relative path like <link rel="canonical" href="/products/shoes"> violates the RFC 6596 specification. Search crawlers may resolve incorrect protocols or hostnames, leading to fragmented indexation.
Solution: Always output fully qualified absolute canonical URLs including protocol, subdomain, and normalized pathname: https://agenticlab.dev/products/shoes.
Attaching onClick={() => navigate('/catalog')} to <div>, <span>, or <button> elements hides route discovery from search spiders. Crawlers rely on href attributes inside <a> tags. Consequently, entire sections remain unindexed.
Solution: Always use <Link to="/path"> or native <a href="/path"> with semantic URLs.
Setting <link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/catalog"> on paginated pages (/catalog?page=2, /catalog?page=3) tells search engines that paginated listings are exact duplicates of page 1. The crawler discards pages 2+, and products listed beyond page 1 drop out of the search index.
Solution: Paginated pages must feature self-referential canonical tags (e.g., https://example.com/catalog?page=2).
When encountering an invalid route, executing navigate('/', { replace: true }) causes crawlers to follow broken links, receive a 200 OK home page redirect, register a Soft 404 penalty, and downgrade domain navigation quality.
Solution: Never redirect missing pages silently to the root. Render a dedicated 404 view with noindex or emit a 404 status code via Edge/Reverse Proxy.
User clicks a <Link to='/catalog'>. React Router intercepts the event, preventing a hard browser reload.
Address bar updates via pushState. Search crawlers bypass this step, requesting the URL directly via HTTP.
React renders target view, computes absolute canonical URL, and hoists it into the head element.
If route matching fails, the NotFound component mounts, injecting the noindex robots directive.
