Browser JavaScript runs on a single-threaded execution model (Single-Threaded Event Loop). The Main Thread is simultaneously responsible for executing application business logic, performing React 19 Virtual DOM Reconciliation and Commit phases, processing user input events (clicks, keypresses, gestures, scrolling), calculating CSS layout geometries, and rasterizing pixels onto the display (Paint).
When a synchronous computational workload running on the Main Thread exceeds 50 milliseconds (classified as a Long Task), the browser window completely locks up:
The only fundamental architectural remedy for CPU-intensive mathematical calculations, data parsing, and image transformations is delegating work to Web Workers (Dedicated Workers).
To eliminate archaic, low-level postMessage / onmessage boilerplate, engineers rely on Comlink.
The Main Thread must be reserved exclusively for rendering the user interface and immediately handling user gestures. Heavy parsing tasks (CSV/Excel/GeoJSON), client-side cryptography, media transcoding, or vector searches should be offloaded to a background Web Worker. Comlink abstracts remote thread messaging into familiar asynchronous function invocations: await workerApi.processData(...).
A Web Worker runs inside an isolated execution environment (DedicatedWorkerGlobalScope). It has no direct access to window, document, DOM nodes, localStorage, or React component context.

│ • Client-side cryptography (Argon2 / SHA-256 / RSA-4096) │
│ • Image compression and rendering via OffscreenCanvas │
│ • Full-text and vector cosine search over 1,000,000 items │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘Inter-thread communication takes place via message serialization. By default, the browser employs the Structured Clone Algorithm, creating deep copies of objects. When transferring datasets spanning hundreds of megabytes, CPU serialization overhead can block the Main Thread just as severely as the calculations themselves!
To achieve zero-copy data transfer, modern web applications utilize:
Profile code with Chrome DevTools Performance Profiler to isolate synchronous tasks exceeding 50 ms.
Implement a strongly-typed worker.ts exposing service methods using Comlink.expose.
Read files into ArrayBuffers and transfer ownership using Comlink.transfer to eliminate memory copies.
Consume worker methods through async promises with automatic worker.terminate() cleanup on unmount.
What happens to an ArrayBuffer in the Main Thread after it is passed to a Web Worker via the Transferable Objects mechanism?
OffscreenCanvas worker resizes and compresses them to WebP 1080p concurrently, saving network bandwidth.Define the typed contract and expose it with Comlink.expose:
import * as Comlink from 'comlink';
export interface ProcessedRow {
id: string;
timestamp: number;
value: number;
category: string;
}
export interface ProcessingReport {
totalRows: number;
validRows: number;
totalSum: number;
averageValue: number;
executionTimeMs: number;
}
export interface DataProcessorApi {
processHeavyDataset(
buffer: ArrayBuffer,
delimiter: string,
onProgress?: (percent: number) => void
): Promise<ProcessingReport>;
}
const dataProcessor: DataProcessorApi = {
async processHeavyDataset(buffer, delimiter, onProgress) {
const startTime = performance.now();
const decoder = new TextDecoder('utf-8');
const csvText = decoder.decode(buffer);
const lines = csvText.split('\n');
const totalLines = lines.length;
let validCount = 0;
let sum = 0;
const step = Math.max(1, Math.floor(totalLines / 100));
for (let i = 1; i < totalLines; i++) {
const line = lines[i]?.trim();
if (!line) continue;
const columns = line.split(delimiter);
const value = parseFloat(columns[2] ?? '0');
if (!Number.isNaN(value)) {
validCount++;
sum += value;
}
// Notify progress every 1% via Comlink.proxy
if (i % step === 0 && onProgress) {
onProgress(Math.round((i / totalLines) * 100));
}
}
const executionTimeMs = performance.now() - startTime;
return {
totalRows: totalLines - 1,
validRows: validCount,
totalSum: sum,
averageValue: validCount > 0 ? sum / validCount : 0,
executionTimeMs,
};
},
};
Comlink.expose(dataProcessor);The custom hook encapsulates worker instantiation and cleanup while exposing a typed RPC proxy:
'use client';
import * as React from 'react';
import * as Comlink from 'comlink';
export interface UseWorkerReturn<T> {
api: Comlink.Remote<T> | null;
isLoading: boolean;
error: Error | null;
terminate: () => void;
}
export function useWorker<T>(
workerFactory: () => Worker,
deps: React.DependencyList = []
): UseWorkerReturn<T> {
const [isLoading, setIsLoading] = React.useState(true);
const [error, setError] = React.useState<Error | null>(null);
const workerRef = React.useRef<Worker | null>(null);
const apiRef = React.useRef<Comlink.Remote<T> | null>(null);
const terminate = React.useCallback(() => {
if (workerRef.current) {
workerRef.current.terminate();
workerRef.current = null;
apiRef.current = null;
}
}, []);
React.useEffect(() => {
setIsLoading(true);
setError(null);
try {
const worker = workerFactory();
workerRef.current = worker;
const remoteApi = Comlink.wrap<T>(worker);
apiRef.current = remoteApi;
setIsLoading(false);
} catch (err) {
setError(err instanceof Error ? err : new Error(String(err)));
setIsLoading(false);
}
return () => {
terminate();
};
// eslint-disable-next-line react-hooks/exhaustive-deps
}, deps);
return {
api: apiRef.current,
isLoading,
error,
terminate,
};
}Initialize dedicated worker using Vite/Webpack worker syntax and bind Comlink proxy.
Read file to ArrayBuffer and transfer ownership using Comlink.transfer(buf, [buf]).
Execute CPU task on background core. Main Thread maintains 0% load and 120 FPS.
Resolve promise in React component, update state, and terminate worker on unmount.
Why is wrapping callback functions in Comlink.proxy(fn) required when passing callbacks (such as onProgress) to a Web Worker?
Here is a large-scale CSV parser component providing real-time progress updates with zero Main Thread frame drops:
'use client';
import * as React from 'react';
import * as Comlink from 'comlink';
import { useWorker } from '@/shared/hooks/useWorker';
import type { DataProcessorApi, ProcessingReport } from '@/shared/workers/dataProcessor.worker';

const [progress, setProgress] = React.useState<number>(0);
const [isProcessing, setIsProcessing] = React.useState(false);
const [report, setReport] = React.useState<ProcessingReport | null>(null);
// Worker factory with standard Next.js / Vite bundler syntax
const { api } = useWorker<DataProcessorApi>(
() =>
new Worker(
new URL('../../shared/workers/dataProcessor.worker.ts', import.meta.url),
{ type: 'module' }
)
);
const handleFileUpload = async (event: React.ChangeEvent<HTMLInputElement>) => {
const file = event.target.files?.[0];
if (!file || !api) return;
setIsProcessing(true);
setProgress(0);
setReport(null);

setProgress(percent);
});
// 3. Transfer ArrayBuffer with zero-copy ownership transfer
const result = await api.processHeavyDataset(
Comlink.transfer(arrayBuffer, [arrayBuffer]),
',',
progressCallback
);
setReport(result);
} catch (err) {
console.error('Background processing failure:', err);
} finally {

}Web Workers operate in an isolated scope. Attempting to pass window, DOM nodes (document.getElementById(...)), or plain function callbacks through postMessage without Comlink.proxy() triggers a fatal runtime error: DOMException: The object could not be cloned. Only serializable values and Transferable objects may cross thread boundaries.
Dispatching large ArrayBuffer objects via worker.postMessage(buffer) without specifying the transfer list (worker.postMessage(buffer, [buffer])) duplicates the entire buffer in RAM and blocks the Main Thread during serialization.
Instantiating new Worker(...) on every button click or component render without calling worker.terminate() creates abandoned background processes. A dozen lingering workers can exhaust browser process memory limits.
Worker thread creation and inter-process communication carry an inherent 1–3 ms latency overhead. Offloading a sorting algorithm for a 50-item array will run up to 10x slower than running it synchronously on the Main Thread. Workers are recommended only for tasks exceeding 30–50 ms.
ArrayBuffer data in < 0.5 ms without memory duplication.postMessage messaging with type-safe asynchronous RPC calls.worker.terminate().
